Home-Based Businesses Are A Big Deal

Home based businesses in Powell River are often silent and unseen members of the local sales and services community. While some business owners prefer and deliberately choose to remain this way, other owners work hard to get their offerings out to the public.

When Linda Wegner, owner of Words of Worth, a home based business that provides writing services to and about other businesses, was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Powell River Chamber of Commerce, it was her determination to showcase the importance of other micro-businesses. Special thanks go out to Jason Schreurs, editor of the Powell River Peak, for his coverage of her work in the October 19, 2016 edition.

In a recently completed report on home-based businesses, Linda found that, licensed or not, these one or two person enterprises are an integral and growing part of the local business scene.

According to Kim Miller, manager at the Powell River Chamber of Commerce, requests for nominations for their annual Business Awards event, garner “tons” of nominations for the category.

Suggestions as to how the Chamber may be more supportive for micro-businesses range from the need for rentable space for pop-up stores to a lowering of Chamber annual membership fees.

Small business owners or operators with suggestions as to how the Chamber could better serve them are encouraged to contact Linda at linda@wordsofworth or call her at 604-483-9210.
