AGM (Awesome General Meeting)

PR Women in Business AGM: An opportunity for all members (new and old) to learn about WiB’s year. We will also be looking for people to volunteer to help make our organization wonderful! Trust us, it is quite fun!

After the AGM, we will have a chance to find out our futures, whether it be in business, love, or life. We have 3 very talented tarot card readers who will be joining us after!

Location: First Credit Union Room @ Powell River Public Library

  • Tarot Card Readings to begin approx. 7pm

Dear Members,


I hope this letter finds you all well. It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to inform you about the unfortunate reality that Coastal Women in Business is facing. Due to insufficient member participation and the imminent resignation of most of the executive board, the current executive has come to the difficult conclusion that we may need to dissolve our non-profit.


We want to emphasize how deeply saddened we are to have come to this point. Over the years, WiB has made a positive impact in our community, through our educational evenings, Movement Mondays, Friday Breakfasts, our annual Influential Women of the Year Awards, our Artisan & Entrepreneur shows, and our networking events, and it is disheartening to see this chapter come to an end. The dedication and hard work of our board members, both past and current, have been commendable, but the past year has been filled with challenges, and we are not seeing the same amount of participation across all our events that we have in years past with no way of determining the reason behind the decline.


The board still firmly believes that Coastal Women in Business’ mission is essential and that there is still potential for significant positive change, however most of the current board of directors are not able to stand for reelection for next year. For WiB to continue being an active part of the community, new members must step up and take on leadership roles as board members. If you have passion for uplifting women in their work and a commitment to the community, you would be an ideal candidate for these crucial roles. Your involvement would help revitalize Coastal Women in Business and ensure the continuation of our organization. Attached, please find descriptions of the positions on the executive board.


The future of Coastal Women in Business will be determined at our Annual General Meeting, which will be held on Friday, September 8 at 6 pm in the First Credit Union Community Room at the library. Snacks will be served, and the meeting will be followed by a tarot reading evening with Juliette Jarvis, Belinda Shelton, and Teresa Harwood-Lynn. We hope to see you there!

Positions of the Board

Board of Directors

A board of directors is the group of women responsible for the strategic management of Coastal Women in Business. The board operates by following the bylaws, a set of rules that governs how the organization must pursue its mission and activities.

President

The top position of the board is the President. In her role, this board member runs board meetings, appoints committees and performs other duties as directed by the bylaws. The President usually MCs monthly meetings and special events. Also, this individual represents the organization in public by giving speeches, writing articles and attending functions on behalf of the organization.

Vice President

Serving directly under the President is the Vice President. This woman is often next in line to become the President (but not necessarily) and serves as the board’s leader when the President is not present, such as during official board meetings and monthly events.

Secretary

The Secretary takes notes, called minutes, at board meetings, then

submits those minutes for amendment or approval by the board. The secretary

keeps the records and non-financial legal documents, including its bylaws, articles of incorporation and minutes of historical meetings. The Secretary is also responsible for the organization’s Thank You cards.

Treasurer

The treasurer keeps the organization’s financial records. The treasurer keeps copies of the main financial records, signs cheques and delivers them, and otherwise oversees and keeps an eye on the organization’s finances. The treasurer also prepares and delivers a treasurer’s report at each of the board’s official meetings and approves the organization’s annual tax filing.

Directors (Total of 5)

Directors who do not have one of the previously discussed roles often volunteer to head committees. These board members attend meetings, receive updates and vote on board matters. They have the right to make motions, discuss them and vote on them. Some of these positions come with a director title, such as events director. After serving as a board member, these individuals might ascend to the secretary, treasurer, vice president and eventually president of the board positions.

Social Media Director

Social media director helps implement and maintain online marketing strategies through social media. You will be responsible for keeping our Social Media up to date. By using various forms of new media, such as blogging, social networking sites (Facebook),discussion boards, monthly newsletters, they help represent WIB through an online channel. Also staying in contact with our Website designer to keep our website up to date with the upcoming events and promotions.

Events Director

The Events Director helps organize outstanding and unforgettable events. You will be responsible for overseeing (or coordinating a committee) for every part of each event. The Awards (May) and The Artisan & Entrepreneur Show (October) are the two big events however there are also the monthly events that need organizing. Preparations such as venues, menus, and evaluating success afterward.

Membership Director

The membership director works as a liaison between WIB and its members. Your job duties include processing new applications of membership, volunteering information to prospective members, collecting bios and information to hand off to our Website Designer. Keeping up with our emails, and once a year you will be responsible for getting out membership renewals and follow-ups.

Director at Large (2 people)

Board members at large have the same authority and similar responsibilities as other board members but may change their roles as the organization moves forward. A member at large, for example, may be tasked by the president or by a vote of the members to head up a committee to fill a vacancy.
